When the five daughters of Tzlofchad ask for an inheritance because their father had no sons, Moshe does not know what to do. He consults God and God says — yes, they’re aboslutely right. They know. It turns out that the Tzlofchad women saw a piece of the Torah that God has up in the heavens that Moshe did not see(Rashi on Numbers 27:7). In this meditation we remember that we each have a piece of God’s Torah that we can see that others — even the wisest among us, like Moshe — cannot see. We also lean in to the particular knowing of the Tzlofchad women here concerning radical equality in God’s eyes, and we experience what it might be like to have God affirm us by saying “yes” to us, too.
