MEDITATION: Here We Lay Down Together (Parashat Matot-Masei)

This meditation looks at the mashal, the parable, which compares the listing of all the Israelite encampments in the desert to a king with an ill child who takes his child on a long journey to get him healed, and on the way back, recounts concerning each place — here, we slept, here we were cold, . . . . (Midrash Tanchuma Masei 3, cited by Rashi on Numbers 33:1). The meditation explores issues around keeping people company in their suffering through their desert sojourns. It is dedicated in loving memory to my dear friend, Sandy Cohen, z”l, who lived honestly, fiercely and bravely through what she liked to call the “bewilderments” (taken from Aviva Zorenberg’s book) of this desert life. May her spirit find peace, rest and love in God. I miss you, Sandy.
