POEM: For My Little Girl On Her Birthday

You are born anew today

received

now,
as you are,
into a dazzling multicolored blanket
woven of the finest threads of heaven,
held out for you
by warm, smiling hands

who desire you
only you

as if at long last
you
are the answer
the fulfillment
the requirement
they had dreamed of
like a wisp of angel wing
left on the wind
of their subconscious,
as if the universe
begat you
in its image

All else stops
for one spirited split second
to celebrate and center
your miraculous entrance.
The rams dance and skip with mirth
on the trembling mountains
as you leap –

innocent and faithful and foolish –

into the stony riverbed below,
a net of love waiting
to break your fall.

Hail to thee, my glorious one
May all who are born
be greeted thusly.
