On the night of the last plague, at the exact midpoint of the night, its darkest time, amidst the anguished cries of the Egyptians, the Israelites, standing in their doorways painted with blood, experienced a revelation, what the rabbis refer to as giluy shechinah, “the revelation of divine presence.” The dogs stopped barking, the dough stopped rising. Everything went still and silent and they became aware of the divine presence around and inside them. In this meditation, we feel into standing in the midst of our own darkest night, and open to a glimpse of our own experience of divine presence in the midst of it, as our protectors (dogs) and strivers (dough risers) begin to relax and recede.
