MEDITATION: The Cleft in the Rock (Parashat Ki Tisa)

The people, as they await Moshe’s return from Mount Sinai, experience tremendous anxiety and uncertainty. In this meditation, we explore our own experience of such anxiety and its physical manifestation in our bodies as shakiness. We consider the urge to “solve” and get rid of that anxiety through false refuges like the Golden Calf. We then move on to bring that shakiness into the quiet intimate moment that follows between Moshe and God, when God places Moshe in the crevice of the rock and passes over him with all God’s goodness. We allow our shaky parts to feel this holding and sense of belonging to the Rock of Life.
